BMI stands for Body Mass Index, and it is a widely used formula to estimate the amount of body fat a person has based on their height and weight. The BMI formula calculates the BMI value, which is then used to classify individuals into different weight categories, such as underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese.



  1. The BMI formula is as follows:

    BMI = weight (kg) / (height (m))^2

    In this formula, weight is measured in kilograms (kg) and height is measured in meters (m). The height should be squared before dividing the weight to get the BMI value.

    For example, let's say a person weighs 70 kilograms and their height is 1.75 meters. To calculate their BMI, we would use the formula:

    BMI = 70 kg / (1.75 m)^2

    BMI = 70 kg / 3.06 m^2

    BMI ≈ 22.87

    The resulting value of 22.87 would be the person's BMI. Based on commonly used BMI ranges, this value would typically fall within the "normal weight" category.

    It's important to note that while BMI is a useful tool for estimating body fat on a population level, it has limitations and may not provide an accurate assessment for certain individuals, such as athletes or people with high muscle mass. It does not take into account factors like muscle-to-fat ratio, distribution of fat, or overall body composition. Therefore, it is always advisable to consult with a healthcare professional for a comprehensive evaluation of one's health and body composition.
